Inis Mor - Historical and other Sites of Interest

Stone Forts on Inis Mor

There are four forts on Inis Mor:

  • Dún Aengus is the most famous of all the forts on the Aran Islands. This amazing fort sits perched on the highest cliffs of Inis Mór. The stone "Chevaux de Frise" at Dun Aengus is the most impressive example of its kind known to exist. Read our blog for more on this impressive structure.

  • Dún Eochla

  • Dún Dúchathair (the Black fort)

  • Dún Eoghanachta

Churches

  • Na Seacht Teampaill (the Seven Chuches) is near Dún Eoghanachta. This has ruins of churches which were built on the earlier site of a monastery dedicated to St. Breacan.

  • Teampall Bheanain (Church of St Benan) is close to Killeany, and is supposedly the world's smallest church!

Areas of Natural Beauty

  • The Worm Hole is a naturally formed rectangular pool close to the base of Dún Aengus.

  • Inis Mór's Seal Colony is also worth a visit, close to the beautiful beach at Portmurvy.

"My husband and I hosted our wedding in Ireland in September of 2008. We came over from the States, as did 63 members of our family and friends, and our entire group went on one of your ship tours of the Cliffs. The experience was the talk of the trip! Everyone had a wonderful time - the cruise was not only a great learning experience but a fabulous way to really appreciate the beauty of the Cliffs of Moher and the West coast of Ireland."
